The client brief for this garden design in Clapham was to reflect the modern – bespoke interior of the house.
The re-design was to incorporate clean lines, be minimal maintenance, have seating for 6 and lower casual seating for morning coffee.
The client also wished to make use of an existing gas BBQ and to make it be part of the new design.
Garden dimensions. 9m x 8m.
The Design Materials
IPE timber, a type a hardwood was used to break up the existing lines of the garden walling. Providing textural interest and its rich tones provide a contrast to the rendered walls and planting.
These tones also complimented the travertine paving.
The Planting
Being a small garden the planting palette was kept to just a few species a plants.
3 black stemmed bamboo (phyllostachys nigra) provide movement and contrast with with the landscaping. These will be allowed to grow tall to gain some privacy from the houses to the rear.
A mass of flowering Salvias and ornamental grasses come to life for seasonal summer interest whilst evergreen box hedging gives structure.
A highly scented jasmin trained on a stainless steel trellis system fills the garden with perfume from May to late June.
